Chief Executive Officer and General Manager

Desired Results

The Chief Executive Officer and General Manager reports to the President of the Board and is the delegated representative of the Board.  In that capacity, the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager is responsible to provide direction and leadership to the Board of Directors and employees of Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) to ensure the organization’s success as one of the work’s top agricultural livestock shows.

Chief Executive Officer and General Manager is responsible to create an organization that operates with a commitment to superior event management, planning and meeting competencies and fosters strong linkages between Agribition and the agricultural industry.


Tasks

Board Support

  • Provide the Board with adequate information to help it reach sound decisions and establish policies
  • Direct the implementation of policies approved by the Board
  • Work with the Board to prepare long-range plans for CWA
  • With assistance of the President, prepare the agenda for regular Board meetings
  • Attend and participate in all regular Board meetings
  • Attend and participate in other meetings as requested by the Board
  • Report regularly to the Board about progress towards organizational objectives, financial status, major purchases and expenditures and other issues of concern to the Board

Make recommendations for improvements to the governance and decision-making processes

Operations

  • Provide leadership and guidance to maintain a high level of performance and effectiveness throughout the organization
  • Establish and maintain operating procedures (not in conflict with the law or board policy) and decide all matters of administrative and supervisory detail in connection with the operation and maintenance of CWA
  • Supervise, direct and report on the performance of their assignments and duties
  • Effectively implement the approved annual operating plan and long-term strategic plan

Financial Management

  • Prepare the annual budget and financial plan for the approval by the Board
  • Ensure implementation and maintenance of an adequate financial reporting system
  • Approve expenditures within limits of board-approved budget

Planning & Development

  • Develop and implement an annual and multi-year event planning process and framework
  • Implement short-range (one year) goals for the Agribition
  • Maintain a favourable relationship with Agribiton’s key suppliers, partners and industry stakeholders according to an approved annual plan to build, maintain and/or expand the organization’s role in the agricultural sector

Human Resources

  • Establish a human resources plan with emphasis on optimizing results from employees, contractors and volunteers
  • Supervise the hiring, evaluation and dismissal of staff

Public Relations

  • Represent CWA as its Chief Executive Officer in all dealing with other organizations, individuals and the general public
  • Promote good public relations with the community
  • Effectively promote CWA as an important event with the local business community

Requirements

Demonstrated experience in the following:

  • Executive, business management and team leadership
  • Human resource management – staff, board, volunteer 
  • Budget creation, analysis and management
  • Marketing, sales and/or promotion
    Lead Strategic planning and implementation
  • Ability to execute yearly plans

Valuable (but not required) assets

  • Knowledgeable about – and experience working within – governmental and political processes
  • Understanding of agricultural issues
  • Understanding of the livestock show industry
  • Experience working with, directing and motivating volunteers
